This Biennale titled "Insulaphilia" will took place in 12 historical locations in Maltese cities between March 11 and May 31, 2024.

FUNGUS ANATOMICUS

In her upcoming solo, Belgian artist Sofie Muller (°1974, Ghent) presents new paintings (oil on topographical maps), cabinets and a large-scale sculpture. Her latest work is an ongoing research into fungi and mycelium, nature’s mysterious alchemists, and their close connection to the existence of our planet, and moreover, our own species: mankind.

Imposed confinement can cause feelings of anxiety and distress. To combat these feelings, Muller developed her own ritual and collected sprouted onions during spring. On these onions she wrote or carved small intentions. She sculpted hearts around them in clay or wax and casted them in bronze, which resulted in a series of 150 unique works.

During summer, Muller continued this project during an artist residence in Palazzo Monti, Brescia. Being in this area, she took the opportunity to do extensive research to Leonardo Da Vinci’s anatomic sketches and his theories on the human heart. 500 years later Muller humbly follows in Da Vinci’s footsteps, conducting her own research to the heart, a universal symbol worldwide.

Movement of the heart will be an international project. The series will be presented simultaneously on 21 March 2021 – the start of spring in Europe – at 10 locations worldwide: Geukens & De Vil (Antwerp/Knokke, Belgium), Fox Jensen (Sidney/Auckland), Proyectos Monclova (Mexico City, Mexico), Tardino6 (Bakoe, Azerbaijan), Michaela Stock (Vienna, Austria), Gallery Maskara (Mumbai, India), Palazzo Monti (Brescia, Italy), Galerie Italienne (Paris, France), Martin Kudlek, (Cologne, Germany), Galeria Biala (Lublin, Poland).

To conclude, the pandemic has heightened environmental awareness all over the world, something quite dear to Muller. For this reason, she chose to create awareness of reforestation by supporting the non-profit-organization One Tree Planted (www.ontreeplanted.org). Per piece sold, approximately 50 new trees will be planted.

Over the course of the past 6 months, Belgium has faced two national lockdowns.

But also in the rest of Europe and other parts of the world, people’s social (and economical) lives repeatedly have been brought to a complete standstill.

Although the imposed confinement is quite challenging, it also rewires our way of living and thinking. For the second time around, Geukens & De Vil invited their artists to create a work in their locked down studio, inspired by this key moment in history.

CONFINED CHALLENGE 2.0 shows artists from the gallery on an international level, presenting:
